Launching DSA’s Green New Deal national campaign

Comrades,

Bernie Sanders and the Green New Deal are surging in polls. But we can’t win either without a mass movement.

Please RSVP here to join DSA’s Green New Deal Campaign Committee this Sunday, February 23rd at 8pm ET / 5pm PT for a nationwide strategy call on how we’re going to win a Green New Deal that builds toward our ecosocialist principles!

This is an inflection point for ecosocialism, with Bernie Sanders holding a clear line of sight on the White House and public power surging in every region. Together, we can anchor a plan to galvanize our communities around demands for a better, resilient, liberated tomorrow.

As many of you remember, convention delegates in August voted near-unanimously to prioritize campaigning for a radical Green New Deal to take on the climate crisis and build working class power.

In 2020, our organizing is leveling up. We’re counting on driven and passionate DSA organizers in chapters across the nation to lead the charge with our Ecosocialist Working Group as we converge with comrades internationally on connected fights.

Now is the time to talk about what organizing for a Green New Deal means at the local, regional, national, and international scales.

The first priority of our DSA Green New Deal campaign is already well underway – sending Bernie Sanders to the White House – and we are compiling DSA resources for Bernie + Green New Deal canvassing, tabling, phonebanking, and more.

Another major plank of our Green New Deal work is energy democracy – and already, DSA chapters from coast to coast are laying the groundwork for a Green New Deal with local campaigns for democratic public control over energy utilities. Our energy democracy organizers are learning valuable lessons from their work to date, and we’re working to synthesize and distribute their resources so DSA members can organize smarter and faster for public power in 2020 and beyond.

In the weeks ahead, we’ll also be building on last fall’s Climate Strikes by gearing up to mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2020. In this pivotal year between accelerating climate chaos and launching the decade of the Green New Deal, it’s time to shake off decades of capitalist greenwashing by organizing with students and workers for a new round of Climate Strikes from Earth Day to May Day.

Look out for more resources soon on how DSA members can build in solidarity with the youth climate strikers, and more resources for campus-based organizers with YDSA!

Soon after our 2/23 call, we’ll be rolling out resources for discussion and political education around “A Planet to Win: Why We Need a Green New Deal,” a manifesto for our ecosocialist era and actionable guide to Green New Deal campaigning by comrades Thea Riofrancos, Daniel Aldana Cohen, Kate Aronoff, and Alyssa Battistoni.

There’s a lot more exciting ecosocialist work developing across DSA locally, regionally, and nationally, and we’re excited to keep building our capacity to support all of your organizing.

Together, we will keep building the momentum we need for a mass movement powerful enough to grind the oil wells to a halt, restore the marine and terrestrial habitats vital to atmospheric equilibrium, and stand up a decommodified, democratic economy of abundance and care for all.

Let’s move!

In solidarity and power,

DSA Green New Deal Campaign Committee
